Andrew Manze

Andrew Manze is a British conductor and violinist known for his exuberant energy and insightful interpretation of a vast repertoire. He currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of both the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Born in Kent, England, on January 14th, 1965, Manze studied Classics at Cambridge University before pursuing his musical career in earnest. A violinist of some distinction, he released an astonishing variety of recordings before turning his focus primarily to conducting.

Regarded as one of his generation’s most influential conductors, Manze has held a number of notable positions in his career including an eight year spell as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (2006 - 2014) and a similarly long and fruitful tenure as Chief Conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hannover from (2014 - 2023). He has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018, took up the same role with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2024, and remains highly sought after by leading orchestras from across the globe. Amongst the many with which he has established longstanding relationships are the Royal Concertgebouw, the Munich Philharmonic and the City of Birmingham and Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestras. Manze has also been a regular guest at New York City’s Mostly Mozart Festival since his debut there in 2012.

A fellow of the Royal College of Music and recipient of the prestigious Rolf Schock Prize in 2011, Manze is particularly recognised as a leading authority on the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Amongst many critically acclaimed recordings, his complete cycle of Vaughan Williams’ nine symphonies with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra stands out.

In addition to his live work and recordings, Manze broadcasts regularly on radio and television; he also writes about, edits and teaches music.
